War diseases revealed by the social media: massive leishmaniasis outbreak in the Syrian Spring

Samer Alasaad Parasites & Vectors 2013, 6:94 (12 April 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

This paper adds a new positive effect of the social media as an alarm system used by Doctor-Activists to report war diseases outbreaks. This may call the attention of the international organizations to assume their responsibilities and play their part in controlling the outbreak of such diseases. This study, based on social media, reports a massive leishmaniasis outbreak during the Syrian Spring.

Development of expression vectors based on pepino mosaic virus

Raquel N Sempere, Pedro Gómez, Verónica Truniger, Miguel A Aranda Plant Methods 2011, 7:6 (11 March 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Plant viruses have a number of advantages as expression vectors, not least the capacity to generate high levels of expression of a recombinant protein throughout the plant. A novel vector based on the pepino mosaic virus (PepMV) is described and its potential for use as an expression vector and for gene silencing in Nicotiana benthamiana demonstrated. Since PepMV also infects tomato, it is likely that the new vector will be of interest to scientists working on this important crop and model plant species.

Microgravity simulation by diamagnetic levitation: effects of a strong gradient magnetic field on the transcriptional profile of Drosophila melanogaster

Raul Herranz, Oliver J Larkin, Camelia E Dijkstra, Richard JA Hill, Paul Anthony, Michael R Davey, Laurence Eaves, Jack JWA van Loon, F Javier Medina, Roberto Marco BMC Genomics 2012, 13:52 (1 February 2012)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

Drosophila melanogaster fruit flies raised in a zero-gravity environment created by a superconducting magnet show substantial changes in the expression of many essential genes, suggesting that extended weightlessness during space flight could also potentially have negative effects on cellular processes.
