Editor’s summary
We investigated and compared the metal accumulation capacity of an adult acanthocephalan (Pomphorhynchus laevis) and larval nematodes of the genus Eustrongylides sp. infecting barbel (Barbus barbus). Our results suggest that, in addition to acanthocephalans, nematodes can also be used as bioindicators for metal pollution. Image: Intestine of a barbel naturally infected with Pomphorhynchus laevis.

In this review, we discuss contributions from the major CD4+ T cell subpopulations to retroviral immunity. Fundamental concepts obtained from studies on numerous viral infections are presented along with a more detailed analysis of studies on murine Friend virus. The relevance of these studies to HIV immunology and immunotherapy is reviewed.

Editor’s summary
A community approach to the diversity of larval parasites in two species of lymnaeid snail, Radix auricularia and Lymnaea stagnalis in man-made interconnected reservoirs of the Ruhr River reveals the usefulness of snail-parasite systems for monitoring the effect of environmental change and eutrophication on parasite transmission in lake ecosystems. Image: Two-dimensional plot based on similarity between parasite component communities.
