Comparison of the metal accumulation capacity between the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis and larval nematodes of the genus Eustrongylides sp. infecting barbel (Barbus barbus)

Milen Nachev, Gerhard Schertzinger, Bernd Sures Parasites & Vectors 2013, 6:21 (18 January 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

We investigated and compared the metal accumulation capacity of an adult acanthocephalan (Pomphorhynchus laevis) and larval nematodes of the genus Eustrongylides sp. infecting barbel (Barbus barbus). Our results suggest that, in addition to acanthocephalans, nematodes can also be used as bioindicators for metal pollution. Merging species? Evidence for hybridization between the eel parasites Anguillicola crassus and A. novaezelandiae (Nematoda, Anguillicolidea)

Daniel S Grabner, Kerstin C Dangel, Bernd Sures Parasites & Vectors 2012, 5:244 (30 October 2012)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

The nematodes Anguillicola crassus and A. novaezelandiae are both non-endemic parasites of the European eel. We demonstrated hybridization of both species in a laboratory infection experiment using microsatellite analysis of adults and offspring. Image: European eel.

p97 complexes as signal integration hubs

Hemmo Meyer BMC Biology 2012, 10:48 (13 June 2012)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

The AAA+ ATPase p97 is known to extract proteins from membranes or complexes for routing to the proteasome for degradation, but Hemmo Meyer, commenting on a recent article from Alexandru and colleagues in BMC Biology, draws attention to increasing evidence that it is a versatile hub for the formation of complexes with distinct functions in cell physiology.
