Sex-specific induction of CYP6 cytochrome P450 genes in cadmium and lead tolerant Anopheles gambiae

Fauzia K Musasia, Alfred O Isaac, Daniel K Masiga, Irene A Omedo, Ramadhan Mwakubambanya, Richard Ochieng, Paul O Mireji Malaria Journal 2013, 12:97 (15 March 2013)

Analysis of gene transcription levels on three cytochrome P450s in three strains of Anopheles gambiae. The first strain was maintained without any selection pressure, while the second was selected for lead tolerance and the third strain for cadmium tolerance. These findings suggest that tolerance to cadmium or lead can influence the metabolism of pyrethroids in the mosquito in a sex-specific manner, with potential implications in mosquito vector control operations.

A square of four e-nets with yellow sticky boards as a collection device can be used for quantifying the numbers of mosquitoes approaching a small oviposition site. Shiny sticky surfaces attract gravid females possibly because they are visually mistaken as aquatic habitats. These materials might be developed further as gravid traps.
