Morphological features and differential counts of Plasmodium knowlesi parasites in naturally acquired human infections
Malaria Journal 2009, 8:73 (21 April 2009)
The morphological resemblance of early trophozoites of P. knowlesi to P. falciparum and later erythrocytic stages to P. malariae makes it extremely difficult to identify P. knowlesi infections by microscopy alone. This is the first, extensive description of the various stages of the parasite as seen in stained blood films.

Susceptibility of human Plasmodium knowlesi infections to anti-malarials
Malaria Journal 2013, 12:425 (19 November 2013)
The first ex vivo drug sensitivity study for Plasmodium knowlesi infection. In the absence of clinical trials informing about the usefulness of respective anti-malarials for the treatment of knowlesi malaria, this report is of high importance to provide evidence for current treatment practice and for future comparative studies.

Evaluation of three rapid diagnostic tests for the detection of human infections with Plasmodium knowlesi
Malaria Journal 2014, 13:60 (18 February 2014)
Three commercially available RDTs have been evaluation for the detection and diagnosis and have found them unacceptable for in the task. Depending on the RDT used, patients with P. knowlesi could be misdiagnosed as P. falciparum with OptiMAL-IT, P. vivax with Paramax-3 and, more correctly, as non-P. vivax/non-P. falciparum with BinaxNOW? Malaria. There is a need for a sensitive and specific RDT for malaria diagnosis in settings where P. knowlesi infections are common.

High proportion of knowlesi malaria in recent malaria cases in Malaysia
Malaria Journal 2014, 13:168 (3 May 2014)
The paper details the molecular characterization of Plasmodium aetiology in clinical cases of malaria throughout Malaysia between 2012 and 2013. The authors passively collect blood samples throughout the entire country in an attempt to categorize how often Plasmodium knowlesi malaria occurs and to estimate its relative prevalence compared to other forms of human malaria in these regions.

Laboratory markers of disease severity in Plasmodium knowlesi infection: a case control study
Malaria Journal 2012, 11:363 (30 October 2012)
An interesting paper which seeks to establish laboratory markers of severe knowlesi malaria. The clinical features of severe knowlesi malaria differ in important respects from severe falciparum malaria, so this analysis is timely
Bionomics of Anopheles latens in Kapit, Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo in relation to the transmission of zoonotic simian malaria parasite Plasmodium knowlesi
Malaria Journal 2008, 7:52 (31 March 2008)
This paper is about the bionomics of Anopheles latens, which is well described. This information is important for our understanding of the parasite transmission dynamics and, in particular, for transmission to humans
Cytoadherence and virulence - the case of Plasmodium knowlesi malaria
Malaria Journal 2012, 11:33 (3 February 2012)
Another twist in the tale of cytoadherence ? Is in vitro cytoadherence really a marker of virulence, even in case of parasites, such as P. knowlesi or P. vivax, which are not normally sequestered ?
