The mitochondrial genome of Protostrongylus rufescens – implications for population and systematic studies

Abdul Jabbar, Namitha Mohandas, Aaron R Jex, Robin B Gasser Parasites & Vectors 2013, 6:263 (12 September 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

In the present study, the mitochondrial (mt) genome of Protostrongylus rufescens (from sheep) was amplified from a single adult worm by long-PCR, sequenced using 454-technology and annotated using bioinformatic tools. The mt genome determined herein provides a source of markers for future investigations of P. rufescens and other lungworms. First report of anthelmintic resistance in Haemonchus contortus in alpacas in Australia

Abdul Jabbar, Angus JD Campbell, Jennifer A Charles, Robin B Gasser Parasites & Vectors 2013, 6:243 (22 August 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

This study provides the first evidence of macrocyclic lactone resistance in Haemonchus contortus in alpacas in Australia. Based on the extent of anthelmintic resistance in sheep nematodes in Australia, veterinarians and alpaca owners should be encouraged to implement integrated parasite management strategies to improve nematode control in alpacas.
