The burden of neglected tropical diseases in Ethiopia, and opportunities for integrated control and elimination

Kebede Deribe, Kadu Meribo, Teshome Gebre, Asrat Hailu, Ahmed Ali, Abraham Aseffa, Gail Davey Parasites & Vectors 2012, 5:240 (24 October 2012)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are significant public health problems in Ethiopia. Ethiopia stands out for having the largest number of NTD cases following Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo in Sub-Saharan Africa. A third of Ethiopians are infected with ascariasis, one quarter is infected with trichuriasis and one in eight Ethiopians lives with hookworm or is infected with trachoma. To achieve success in integrated control of NTDs, integrated mapping, rapid scale-up of interventions and operational research into co-implementation of intervention packages will be crucial. . A dynamic model of some malaria-transmitting anopheline mosquitoes of the Afrotropical region. II. Validation of species distribution and seasonal variations

Torleif M Lunde, Meshesha Balkew, Diriba Korecha, Teshome Gebre-Michael, Fekadu Massebo, Asgeir Sorteberg, Bernt Lindtjørn Malaria Journal 2013, 12:78 (25 February 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Validation of a mathematical model described earlier. Overall, the model gives a realistic representation of seasonal and year-to-year variability in mosquito densities and it can accurately predict the distribution of An. gambiae s.s. and An. arabiensis in sub-Saharan Africa. It may be used for seasonal and long-term predictions of changes in the burden of malaria.

Analysis of malaria surveillance data in Ethiopia: what can be learned from the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response System?

Daddi Jima, Milliyon Wondabeku, Abebe Alemu, Admas Teferra, Nuraini Awel, Wakgari Deressa, Adamu Adissie, Zerihun Tadesse, Teshome Gebre, Aryc W Mosher, Frank O Richards, Patricia M Graves Malaria Journal 2012, 11:330 (17 September 2012)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

The data suggest that the scale-up of interventions has had considerable impact on malaria in-patient cases and mortality. Inclusion of climate information over this time period and extension of the dataset to more years is needed to clarify the impact of control measures compared to natural cycles of malaria.
