An annotated list of fish parasites (Isopoda, Copepoda, Monogenea, Digenea, Cestoda, Nematoda) collected from Snappers and Bream (Lutjanidae, Nemipteridae, Caesionidae) in New Caledonia confirms high parasite biodiversity on coral reef fish

Jean-Lou Justine, Ian Beveridge, Geoffrey A Boxshall, Rodney A Bray, Terrence L Miller, František Moravec, Jean-Paul Trilles, Ian D Whittington Aquatic Biosystems 2012, 8:22 (4 September 2012)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

A comprehensive overview of parasite diversity associated with coral reef fishes in New Caledonia shows that, with the extinction of a single fish species, co-extinction of at least ten parasitic species would occur.

Accurate inference of shoot biomass from high-throughput images of cereal plants

Mahmood R Golzarian, Ross A Frick, Karthika Rajendran, Bettina Berger, Stuart Roy, Mark Tester, Desmond S Lun Plant Methods 2011, 7:2 (1 February 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | Cited on BioMed Central |  Editor’s summary

With the development of advanced facilities for high-throughput phenotyping of crop plants, there is a need to develop accurate and reliable methods for inferring biological data from captured images. By modelling the dry weight of bread wheat shoots as a function of plant area and plant age it was possible to minimise the difference between actual and estimated shoot dry weights. The method was further validated with barley plants, suggesting its wider applicability to different wheat varieties and other plant species.

Protocol: optimising hydroponic growth systems for nutritional and physiological analysis of Arabidopsis thaliana and other plants

Simon J Conn, Bradleigh Hocking, Maclin Dayod, Bo Xu, Asmini Athman, Sam Henderson, Lucy Aukett, Vanessa Conn, Monique K Shearer, Sigfredo Fuentes, Stephen D Tyerman, Matthew Gilliham Plant Methods 2013, 9:4 (5 February 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | 1 comment |  Editor’s summary

Hydroponics is an extremely useful technique for growing plants under controlled nutrient conditions, particularly where clean roots are needed for physiological or microscopic analysis or for RNA extraction. The detailed protocol set out here should make it straightforward for other laboratories to rapidly and successfully adopt the technique. A video is also available at http://t.co/WoAYgYy84C.
