Editor’s summary
With the development of advanced facilities for high-throughput phenotyping of crop plants, there is a need to develop accurate and reliable methods for inferring biological data from captured images. By modelling the dry weight of bread wheat shoots as a function of plant area and plant age it was possible to minimise the difference between actual and estimated shoot dry weights. The method was further validated with barley plants, suggesting its wider applicability to different wheat varieties and other plant species.

Editor’s summary
Hydroponics is an extremely useful technique for growing plants under controlled nutrient conditions, particularly where clean roots are needed for physiological or microscopic analysis or for RNA extraction. The detailed protocol set out here should make it straightforward for other laboratories to rapidly and successfully adopt the technique. A video is also available at http://t.co/WoAYgYy84C.
