Editor’s summary
The review describes previous successes on using molecular markers of drug resistance and lessons learned. A standardized global database of molecular markers of drug resistance linking up with databases containing in vivo efficacy trial results, in vitro and pharmacokinetic studies could form an essential resource to guide policy makers in choice of first line antimalarial drugs, drugs for intermittent preventive treatment (IPT) and prophylactic drugs for travellers.

Editor’s summary
Since the late 1970’s efforts have been made by WHO to create a monitoring system for the evaluation of the global development of drug resistance. The complexity of combination antimalarials and the multiplicity of interested parties in this field, now make a much broader and all inclusive monitoring/surveillance system essential.
