Crocodylians evolved scattered multi-sensory micro-organs

Nicolas Di-Poï, Michel C Milinkovitch EvoDevo 2013, 4:19 (2 July 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Crocodylians are known to have mechanosensory organs located in discrete areas on their armoured, scaly skin. However, now it appears, these Integumentary Sensory Organs (ISOs) do not only sense pressure, but temperature and chemical changes in their environments. These pools of sensory neurons are unique among vertebrates, and differ significantly from the diffused sensory systems usually found in skin.
