FTIR-ATR-based prediction and modelling of lignin and energy contents reveals independent intra-specific variation of these traits in bioenergy poplars

Guanwu Zhou, Gail Taylor, Andrea Polle Plant Methods 2011, 7:9 (10 April 2011)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

In the context of breeding for better biofuels, the lignin and energy contents of plant material are important traits. Here a high-throughput method for screening the lignin and calorific content of multiple poplar genotypes unexpectedly reveals that the lignin content of wood is not a good predictor of its energy content. Thus it may be possible to optimize the energy content of trees without necessarily increasing their lignin content.
