A comprehensive evaluation of rodent malaria parasite genomes and gene-expression
BMC Biology 2014, 12:86 (30 October 2014)
Plasmodium parasites that infect rodents are promising laboratory models for human malaria, but our ability to interrogate their biology has been limited by a scarcity of genomic data. As a comprehensive resource for future research, Otto and colleagues have generated a wealth of genomic, transcriptomic and genotype diversity data.

Epidemiology of multimorbidity in China and implications for the healthcare system: cross-sectional survey among 162,464 community household residents in southern China
BMC Medicine 2014, 12:188 (23 October 2014)
Multimorbidity occurs in over 10% of survey respondents in southern China, and secondary care is used preferentially over primary care by those with multimorbidities, suggesting that a stronger primary care system needs to be developed for these patients.

Visual impairment is associated with physical and mental comorbidities in older adults: a cross-sectional study
BMC Medicine 2014, 12:181 (17 October 2014)
Patients over 65 years with visual impairment are more likely to have physical and mental comorbidities in comparison to their peers without visual impairment, indicating the need for specialized care to address individual needs in this patient group.

Considering methodological options for reviews of theory: illustrated by a review of theories linking income and health
Systematic Reviews 2014, 3:114 (13 October 2014)
Theoretical reviews are becoming increasingly common, but there is no consensus on the best methodological approach. Assessment of how the stages of conducting a systematic review can be adapted for a review of theory is discussed, using the casual relationship between income and health as a working example.

Malaria Journal 2014, 13:396 (9 October 2014)
No improvement in mortality and personal protection was obtained by combining LLINs with p-methyl wall lining material. The study demonstrates the challenge that malaria control programmes will face if resistance to multiple insecticides continues to spread.

BMC Medicine 2014, 12:151 (3 October 2014)

Using monoclonal antibodies to label living root hairs: a novel tool for studying cell wall microarchitecture and dynamics in Arabidopsis
Plant Methods 2014, 10:30 (2 October 2014)
By labelling living root hairs with cell wall polymer-specific antibodies the authors were able to directly visualize cell wall dynamics throughout development. This will be an important new tool for studying specific interactions occurring between membrane trafficking networks, the cytoskeleton and the cell wall deposition/remodeling mechanism in developing root hairs.
