Editor’s summary
Bioefficacy of long-lasting insecticidal nets against four pyrethroid-resistant populations of An. gambiae from Uganda varied depending on the net type and origin of the mosquitoes, with the exception of a combination net which performed optimally against all mosquito populations. Observed sub-optimal performance of pyrethroid-only nets is of concern, considering that all nets were unused Rresistance in Uganda is high and increasing, and scale-up of pyrethroid-treated nets is ongoing. In this setting, the proportion of malaria patients receiving appropriate ACT treatment at drug shops was low. This was due to the practice of presumptive treatment, inadequate training on malaria management and lack of knowledge that ACT was the recommended first-line treatment for malaria.

Editor’s summary
Children suffering from sepsis in the FEAST trial given fluid boluses exhibited excess mortality; analysis of the data suggests that this was due to cardiovascular collapse, which should prompt a re-evaluation of fluid resuscitation practice.
