Life cycle of Renylaima capensis, a brachylaimid trematode of shrews and slugs in South Africa: two-host and three-host transmission modalities suggested by epizootiology and DNA sequencing

Wilhelm F Sirgel, Patricio Artigas, M Bargues, Santiago Mas-Coma Parasites & Vectors 2012, 5:169 (13 August 2012)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Renylaima capensis is a trematode infecting the urinary system of the shrew Myosorex varius. It uses two transmission strategies, including a two-host life cycle by predation of the slug Ariostralis nebulosa harbouring intrasporocystic cercariae as the normal pattern. However, another slug Ariopelta capensis is just starting to be introduced as a second molluscan host in which small metacercariae are able to develop. Thermal limits of wild and laboratory strains of two African malaria vector species, Anopheles arabiensis and Anopheles funestus

Candice L Lyons, Maureen Coetzee, John S Terblanche, Steven L Chown Malaria Journal 2012, 11:226 (6 July 2012)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

The overall patterns point to little plasticity for thermal limits and this finding points to limited adaptive potential in these species, which is consistent with some data from other mosquitoes. The data are welcome given the limited information available on the physiological behaviour of the mosquitoes.
