Editor’s summary
The incidence and determinants of household catastrophic out-of-pocket payments for TB care were assessed in rural Nigeria. The proportion of households who incurred catastrophic payments decreased from 69% among households belonging to the poorest income quartile to 15% among those belonging to the richest income quartile. A number of factors were associated with catastrophic out-of-pocket payments for TB care, indicating financial. Image: Drugs/laboratory costs covered; yet costs for TB care are catastrophic.

Editor’s summary
Malaria has exerted extraordinary evolutionary pressure on the human genome and appears to have selected for multiple genetic polymorphisms that provide protection against severe disease. The best-characterized human genetic polymorphism associated with malaria results in sickle haemoglobin (HbS).
