Household catastrophic payments for tuberculosis care in Nigeria: incidence, determinants, and policy implications for universal health coverage

Kingsley Ukwaja, Isaac Alobu, Seye Abimbola, Philip Hopewell Infectious Diseases of Poverty 2013, 2:21 (17 September 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

The incidence and determinants of household catastrophic out-of-pocket payments for TB care were assessed in rural Nigeria. The proportion of households who incurred catastrophic payments decreased from 69% among households belonging to the poorest income quartile to 15% among those belonging to the richest income quartile. A number of factors were associated with catastrophic out-of-pocket payments for TB care, indicating financial. Image: Drugs/laboratory costs covered; yet costs for TB care are catastrophic.
