Editor’s summary
Hungrier animals are expected to extend their search at the risk of physiological collapse if such attempts fail, hence are anticipated to switch from enhanced (to maximize food intake) to reduced (to minimize energy expenditure) movement/ activity as starvation time increases. By tracking free ranging Griffon vultures with GPS-accelerometer tags we provide evidence for this trade-off, and show that vultures optimize their response to increased hunger by alternating between these two foraging strategies.

Editor’s summary
T-LoCoH is a technique and software tool for analyzing movement data, producing maps of home ranges and behaviour patterns. T-LoCoH was tested with virtual animals and also data from GPS tracking collars attached to Springbok antelope in Namibia. Developed for large volume GPS datasets, T-LoCoH excels in highlighting different patterns of time use over different parts of the home range.
