Mixed strategies of griffon vultures’ (Gyps fulvus) response to food deprivation lead to a hump-shaped movement pattern

Orr Spiegel, Roi Harel, Wayne M Getz, Ran Nathan Movement Ecology 2013, 1:5 (1 August 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF |  Editor’s summary

Hungrier animals are expected to extend their search at the risk of physiological collapse if such attempts fail, hence are anticipated to switch from enhanced (to maximize food intake) to reduced (to minimize energy expenditure) movement/ activity as starvation time increases. By tracking free ranging Griffon vultures with GPS-accelerometer tags we provide evidence for this trade-off, and show that vultures optimize their response to increased hunger by alternating between these two foraging strategies.
