Editor’s summary
A microsatellite analysis of nearly 250 isolates from around the globe, indicates a very wide diversity in the intron-4 sequence, resulting in the identification of 17 distinct types among the 124 CQS isolates, whereas all but two of the 125 CQR isolates carried a single type. These data reinforce the hypothesis that a single pfcrt allele spread from Asia to Africa.

Editor’s summary
The major mosquito vectors in South East Asia, Africa and South America show different susceptibilities for infection by rodent malaria species. While Plasmodium berghei and Plasmodium yoelii infect both African and Asian mosquitoes, it had previously reported that P. berghei cannot infect the South American mosquito, Anopheles albimanus. This study elegantly demonstrates that this infection is possible.

Editor’s summary
Historical data from an open, randomized study, conducted in 1975 and designed to examine the impact of malaria chemoprophylaxis on serological responses to various vaccines in African children. These, previously unpublished data, are now valuable because of renewed interest in the use of intermittent chemoprophylaxis to prevent severe malaria in children.
