Editor’s summary
Trypanosoma livingstonei is a new species from African bats that falls at the edge of the T. cruzi clade comprising all bat trypanosomes regardless of their origin from Africa, Europe or South America. This study supports the hypothesis that trypanosomes from several mammalian orders nesting into this clade evolved from a bat trypanosome, thus supporting the bat seeding evolutionary hypothesis for the origin of this clade, which includes the agents of human American trypanosomosis T. cruzi and T. rangeli. Editor’s summary
Comparing the expression of the decapentaplagic (dpp) gene in the mantle of gastopods with coiled and non-coiled shells reveals the molecular mechanism underlying the development of shell coiling. A protein gradient in the mantle causes asymmetric cell proliferation, leading to non-uniform shell growth which causes the shell to coil.
