Trypanosoma livingstonei: a new species from African bats supports the bat seeding hypothesis for the Trypanosoma cruzi clade

Luciana Lima, Oneida Espinosa-Álvarez, Patrick B Hamilton, Luis Neves, Carmen SA Takata, Marta Campaner, Márcia Attias, Wanderley de Souza, Erney P Camargo, Marta MG Teixeira Parasites & Vectors 2013, 6:221 (3 August 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Trypanosoma livingstonei is a new species from African bats that falls at the edge of the T. cruzi clade comprising all bat trypanosomes regardless of their origin from Africa, Europe or South America. This study supports the hypothesis that trypanosomes from several mammalian orders nesting into this clade evolved from a bat trypanosome, thus supporting the bat seeding evolutionary hypothesis for the origin of this clade, which includes the agents of human American trypanosomosis T. cruzi and T. rangeli. Left-right asymmetric expression of dpp in the mantle of gastropods correlates with asymmetric shell coiling

Keisuke Shimizu, Minoru Iijima, Davin HE Setiamarga, Isao Sarashina, Tetsuhiro Kudoh, Takahiro Asami, Edi Gittenberger, Kazuyoshi Endo EvoDevo 2013, 4:15 (28 May 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Comparing the expression of the decapentaplagic (dpp) gene in the mantle of gastopods with coiled and non-coiled shells reveals the molecular mechanism underlying the development of shell coiling. A protein gradient in the mantle causes asymmetric cell proliferation, leading to non-uniform shell growth which causes the shell to coil.
