Cryo-electron tomography reveals four-membrane architecture of the Plasmodium apicoplast
Malaria Journal 2013, 12:25 (19 January 2013)
The apicoplast has always been difficult to resolve in conventional electron microscopy. Cryo-electron tomography was employed to image merozoites of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium berghei frozen in their near-native state. Three-dimensional reconstructions revealed the number of apicoplast membranes and the association of the apicoplast with other organelles.

Anopheles plumbeus (Diptera: Culicidae) in Europe: a mere nuisance mosquito or potential malaria vector?
Malaria Journal 2012, 11:393 (26 November 2012)
The results show that a sample of field-caught Anopheles plumbeus has a moderate to high receptivity towards Plasmodium falciparum. Considering the increased mobility of humans between Europe and malaria endemic countries and changes in environment and climate, these data strongly suggest that this mosquito species could act as a vector for malaria and thus significantly contribute to increasing the malaria transmission risk in Central-Western Europe.

Genetic diversity of expressed Plasmodium falciparum var genes from Tanzanian children with severe malaria
Malaria Journal 2012, 11:230 (16 July 2012)
A study looking at var gene expression profiles in clinical isolates. As the var genes/PfEMP1 proteins are considered major virulence determinants for P. falciparum, there is significant interest in understanding if specific PfEMP1 types are associated with severe disease. This is complicated because there is extensive diversity in the var gene family and it is difficult to have universal primers that can provide a comprehensive picture of var gene expression during infection.
