Editor’s summary
We found that koalas living close to the arid periphery of their geographic distribution required larger home range sizes and showed higher habitat selectivity than those close to the centre of their distribution. In semi-arid regions higher annual rainfall and freestanding water availability reduced home range size and increased tortuosity of movement patterns, whilst higher short-term rainfall increased male home range size and resulted in larger, more linear distances travelled.
