Rapid separation of developing Arabidopsis seeds from siliques for RNA or metabolite analysis

Philip David Bates, Jeremy Burke Jewell, John Browse Plant Methods 2013, 9:9 (26 March 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

This simple method greatly speeds up the process of harvesting developing seeds from their siliques while preserving their contents in liquid nitrogen. It should be a boon for anyone who uses Arabidopsis as a model system for studying seed development.

Genetic characterization of Theileria equi infecting horses in North America: evidence for a limited source of U.S. introductions

Carina M Hall, Joseph D Busch, Glen A Scoles, Kristina A Palma-Cagle, Massaro W Ueti, Lowell S Kappmeyer, David M Wagner Parasites & Vectors 2013, 6:35 (11 February 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

This study found North American Theileria equi were placed in two of the four previously described 18S groups. Arrhenotoky and oedipal mating in the northern fowl mite (Ornithonyssus sylviarum) (Acari: Gamasida: Macronyssidae)

John B McCulloch, Jeb P Owen Parasites & Vectors 2012, 5:281 (4 December 2012)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

The northern fowl mite is a widespread ectoparasite of birds and a pest of poultry. We report that unmated females produce male offspring and are able to mate with sons to subsequently produce both sexes. This makes all females, regardless of mating status, capable of transmitting to new hosts to initiate infestations. Image: Scanning electron micrograph of an adult, female northern fowl mite.
