Lack of Plasmodium vivax infections and high frequency of the erythroid silent Duffy antigen genotype in Haiti

Thomas A Weppelmann, Tamar E Carter, Zhongsheng Chen, Michael E von Fricken, Gladys Memnon, Yves S Victor, Alexander Existe, Bernard A Okech Malaria Journal 2013, 12:30 (24 January 2013)

Abstract | Provisional PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

In this preliminary study, no cases of P. vivax were confirmed by PCR in Haiti. The high frequency of the FYES allele that silences erythroid expression of the Duffy antigen offers a biologically plausible explanation for the lack of P. vivax infections observed.

Expression of trypsin modulating oostatic factor (TMOF) in an entomopathogenic fungus increases its virulence towards Anopheles gambiae and reduces fecundity in the target mosquito

Layla Kamareddine, Yanhua Fan, Mike A Osta, Nemat O Keyhani Parasites & Vectors 2013, 6:22 (21 January 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

We demonstrate increased virulence (lowered LD50 and LT50 values as compared to the wild-type parent strain) towards Anopheles gambiae using the entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana, transformed to express trypsin modulating oostatic factor (TMOF) derived from A. aegypti. In addition, the developed strain resulted in >60% decrease in fecundity of infected females. Image: A. gambiae infected with B. bassiana.
