Multiplication of the waterborne pathogen Cryptosporidium parvum in an aquatic biofilm system

Wan Koh, Peta L Clode, Paul Monis, RC Thompson Parasites & Vectors 2013, 6:270 (19 September 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF |  Editor’s summary

This study reports that aquatic biofilms not only serve as environment reservoirs for Cryptosporidium oocysts but also support the subsequent development of Cryptosporidium in aquatic environments. Image: The environmental stage of Cryptosporidium-oocyst.

Movement patterns of an arboreal marsupial at the edge of its range: a case study of the koala

Nicole Davies, Galina Gramotnev, Leonie Seabrook, Adrian Bradley, Greg Baxter, Jonathan Rhodes, Daniel Lunney, Clive McAlpine Movement Ecology 2013, 1:8 (12 September 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF |  Editor’s summary

We found that koalas living close to the arid periphery of their geographic distribution required larger home range sizes and showed higher habitat selectivity than those close to the centre of their distribution. In semi-arid regions higher annual rainfall and freestanding water availability reduced home range size and increased tortuosity of movement patterns, whilst higher short-term rainfall increased male home range size and resulted in larger, more linear distances travelled.
