Editor’s summary
We have identified and characterized the expression of a defensin gene in Lutzomyia longipalpis, the main vector of visceral leishmaniasis in South America. Here we provide evidence for a clear specificity in the response of this insect to different bacteria, a discrete response to Leishmania oral infection and a late response to Leishmania hemocoel infection. This information adds much needed knowledge to the biology of this important vector. Image: L. longipalpis adult male.

Editor’s summary
In areas where the vector species transmitting Wuchereria bancrofti are Anopheles mosquitoes, it is feasible to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) using Mass Drug Administration alone. This review outlines the differences in the diversity and transmission competence in the An. gambiae vectors of LF in West Africa, and the challenges it poses to the 2020 elimination goal. It calls for a better understanding of the vector competence of mosquitoes infected with W. bancrofti in different areas and a supplementation of MDA activities with vector control.
