Over-diagnosis of malaria by microscopy in the Kilombero Valley, Southern Tanzania: an evaluation of the utility and cost-effectiveness of rapid diagnostic tests

Kelly Harchut, Claire Standley, Andrew Dobson, Belia Klaassen, Clotilde Rambaud-Althaus, Fabrice Althaus, Katarzyna Nowak Malaria Journal 2013, 12:159 (10 May 2013)

Abstract | Provisional PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Presumptive treatment used to be recommended by WHO, on the assumption that it is safer to treat non-malarial patients with anti-malarials than missing a true case of malaria. With a reduced incidence of malaria, a much increased cost of treatment and the realization of the risks of not identifying the true cause of febrile illness, there is now greater emphasis on accurate biological diagnosis. This study shows the advantages of using RDTs compared to poor quality microscopy.

Dapagliflozin add-on to metformin in type 2 diabetes inadequately controlled with metformin: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled 102-week trial

Clifford J Bailey, Jorge L Gross, Delphine Hennicken, Nayyar Iqbal, Traci A Mansfield, James F List BMC Medicine 2013, 11:43 (20 February 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

In a 102 week trial, addition of dapagliflozin to metformin therapy for type 2 diabetes patients was effective for glycemic control in those who are inadequately controlled by metformin alone, suggesting a novel therapeutic option for those requiring long-term management.

Nets, spray or both? The effectiveness of insecticide-treated nets and indoor residual spraying in reducing malaria morbidity and child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa

Nancy Fullman, Roy Burstein, Stephen S Lim, Carol Medlin, Emmanuela Gakidou Malaria Journal 2013, 12:62 (13 February 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Whether ITNs, IRS or both should be used, and under what transmission environments is an important topic in malaria control and evaluation. The authors used matched regression analyses to assess the association of vector control (ITNs and/or IRS) under routine programme conditions, using national household surveys.

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed | F1000 Biology |  Editor’s summary

204 years after Charles Darwin’s birth, sequencing of the genome of the Darwin’s Finch Geospiza magnirostris reveals over 13,000 predicted genes, of which two under positive selection may have contributed to beak morphology evolution, which so interested Darwin.

Multi-channel acoustic recording and automated analysis of Drosophila courtship songs

Benjamin J Arthur, Tomoko Sunayama-Morita, Philip Coen, Mala Murthy, David L Stern BMC Biology 2013, 11:11 (31 January 2013)

Abstract | Full text | PDF | PubMed |  Editor’s summary

Drosophila fruit flies' "singing" during courtship is a model system for both genetic and neural control of behaviour. A newly-designed recording system allows for analysis of the songs' various rhythms and cycles in unprecedented detail.
