Neem oil has good larvicidal properties for mosquitoes and suppresses successful adult emergence at very low concentrations. Considering the wide distribution and availability of this tree and its products along the East African coast, this may prove a readily available and cheap alternative to conventional larvicides.

Editor’s summary
The soluble glutathione transferases (GSTs) are a large, conserved family of proteins that use the tripeptide glutathione as a cosubstrate or coenzyme. They are predominantly expressed in the cytosol and have a range of catalytic and non-catalytic functions, including detoxification of herbicides and protection from oxidative stress, and have been implicated in other cellular processes.

Editor’s summary
There have been numerous malaria studies published, which mostly depend on human landing catch or CDC-LT collections, but only few studies have looked at alternative sampling tools, which are needed in resource-poor areas where even batteries are often not available. A tent trap requires only one human person sleeping in it, while all mosquito sampling tools to-date depend on human (volatiles), which vary significantly and hence, sampling is strongly dependent on the odour characteristics of the human host.

Editor’s summary
The paper evaluates the reported motives behind installation of ceilings and screens in a large East African urban city endemic for malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases. The reported human preferences for blocking specific mosquito entry points are compared with the known preferences of mosquitoes for various points of entry into houses.
