BioMed Central's Institutional Membership
shows rapid growth
In the short time
since our last quarterly librarian news update we have welcomed 60
new members onboard. This proves the tremendous level of support
that exists within the science and library community for our open
access publishing model. Recent new Members include:
NHS England - This is our largest
consortia deal and includes 500 hospitals and 1.2 million staff
Max Planck Society - This includes
81 institutes
CNRS
In addition to
the Members above we are particularly pleased to announce that 18 of the
28 Canadian Association of Research libraries have now become members and
that 6 out of 8 US Ivy League Universities are now onboard.

The pioneers behind
membership acquisitions
A great number of key
decision makers and librarians within institutions have chosen to become
BioMed Central Members. These institutions and individuals are setting a
pioneering example of what can be done to enhance the communication of
science, and we are grateful for their continued support of our philosophy
and publishing program. For this reason we have asked a number of our
Members to submit Membership profiles, below is a comment from one of our
pioneers:
 |
|
Frank Norman, Librarian, National
Institute for Medical Research, London UK
"Harold Varmus' E-Biomed proposal in 1999 stimulated a good deal of
creative thinking about how biomedical scholarly communication could
be enhanced. It felt like we were stuck in a rigid orbit where the
centrifugal force of readers wanting free access to research
literature could not overcome the centripetal force of authors wanting
to publish with the well-known biomedical journal brands. BioMed
Central is a bold move to give a sharp jolt to the publishing system
and set the literature free. If they are ultimately successful then we
will see much better dissemination of research findings." |

Huge uptake in starting new Open Access journals
We have seen great
interest from editorial groups and individual researchers wanting to set
up new Open Access journals with BioMed Central. We now have 37 new
journals set up by independent editorial boards and many more in the
pipeline. See
a list of these new journals and find out more about this program
offered by BioMed Central whereby we offer the means to start a new,
online journal with full-text open access. Editorial control remains in
the researchers' hands, but we provide free publishing and technical
expertise.
