Use our Advocacy Kit to help spread the
word
BioMed Central has launched an Advocacy Kit to provide supporters and
advocates of open access with the necessary tools to help spread the word about
BioMed Central and open access publishing in general. The kit consists of a host
of resources, such as presentations, a newsletter article, posters etc., which
you can use to help educate faculty colleagues and administrators at your
institution about the importance of creating change in scholarly communication
by publishing in open access research journals.
We hope that you will find the Advocacy Kit useful and urge you to
use the resources to help gain the support of colleagues for open
access journals.

Partnership with INIST-CNRS will
create a new national archive of open access research
BioMed
Central and INIST (Institut de

all the research articles published in BioMed Central’s journals are archived,
without delay, at the United States National Library of Medicine’s PubMed
Central site. The INIST national archive will be another way in which the
information published in BioMed Central's journals is securely archived.

further information read the press
release.

Open
Access Days
Following
the impressive show of support from the library community for BioMed Central’s
Institutional Membership Program, we are arranging a series of Open Access Days,
to take place at both member and non-member institutions worldwide.
The aim of
these Open Access Days is to inform authors about BioMed Central’s publishing
activities and to encourage them to submit their papers and spread the word
about us to their colleagues.
Open
Access Days have already been held at Ghent University, the University of
Virginia, the University of Utah and a number of other institutions.
These days can include presentations by a visiting BioMed Central
representative, website demonstrations of how to submit a manuscript, and
accounts of authors’ experiences of publishing their research in our open
access journals.
If you
think that your institution would benefit from holding an Open Access Day in
2003, please contact Becky Fishman (becky@biomedcentral.com).

BioMed
Central Member Profiles
BioMed Central Member Profiles feature some of the
key decision makers within institutions that have become
BioMed Central Members. These
individuals are a pioneering example of what can be done to
enhance the communication of science.
Profiling
Susan Starr at UCSD
The
University of California at San Diego, along with the other 9 University of California campuses, became a member of BioMed
Central in September 2002, under the auspices of the California
Digital Library.
“UC's
collaboration with BMC will help to facilitate and support
faculty-led innovations in scholarly communication. Scholars
publishing in BMC journals are ensured widespread dissemination
of their work while the BMC business model promises to increase
open access to scholarly
publishing.
Finding such a model for Biology and Medicine has been
particularly difficult, and I am pleased that UC is supporting
this innovative approach.”
Susan
Starr
Director of the Biomedical Library
University of California, San Diego
La Jolla, USA
Susan
has been Associate
University Librarian for Sciences at UCSD and Director of the
Biomedical Library since December 1998.
In a library career spanning over twenty years, Susan has
held senior positions in a number of key UC libraries.
Susan
has a PhD in Child Psychology, and obtained her MLS from UC
Berkeley.
