Editorial Office – Senior Editorial Assistant

Springer are seeking a proactive individual with excellent English language skills, attention to detail, computer literate, and strong organisational skills to work on our scientific journals as a Senior Editorial Assistant. A background in science, publishing or other relevant experience would be advantageous, but not essential.

This Role will be based in Guildford until November 2009, then will transfer to: Grays Inn Road, London.

You will focus on supporting editors, authors and reviewers to ensure timely peer review of articles across our Clinical Medicine journals. The role will involve close liaison with internal departments and external Scientific Editors, many of whom are international clinicians.

Main Duties:

  • To provide support for the acquisition, development and management of new and existing periodicals;
  • Working with the executive Editor to compile and complete Publisher’s reports for distribution to editors, editorial boards, and society partners;
  • To monitor editorial review status and assist journal editorial offices in ensuring manuscripts are processed efficiently and effectively;
  • Routine administrative work, such as preparing cheque requests, correspondence, invoice vouchers, updating the departmental database and arranging meetings;
  • To respond to general journal enquiries (instructions for authors, society online access, contact information, copy right etc);
  • To work with production departments to meet publication deadlines (for journals managed by them and Executive Editor);
  • To undertake market research for new product proposals;
  • To assist in the completion of journal proposals for both new launches and acquisitions; and
  • Direct management of one report.

Requirements:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Highly organised
  • Previous experience of STM Publishing in books or journals will be an advantageous
  • Computer literate

Editorial Production Assistant - Special Projects - BioMed Central

BioMed Central, the world's largest online open access publisher, has a vacancy for an Editorial Production Assistant to join its Special Projects production team. Project managing online journal supplements from initial enquiry to publication, applicants will need strong organizational skills and a common sense approach. The position involves liaising with clients, authors, freelancers and in-house departments.

We are seeking a well-organized, proactive person with who is able to demonstrate good English language skills, a keen eye for detail, computer literacy and an ability to work to tight deadlines. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in publishing in a forward-thinking and dynamic company. A background in science, publishing or other relevant fields useful, but is not essential as training will be given.

The Editorial Production Assistant works primarily on the production of academic supplements to BioMed Central’s biomedical journals, though there may also be some work on printed and industry-sponsored projects.
