BioMed Central, the Open Access Publisher, is looking for a motivated, articulate, well-organised individual with knowledge of the publishing industry to oversee the running and development of its recently launched journal, Genome Medicine. The role will be full time and based in our offices in London, UK.
Duties of the Managing Editor will include:
- Management of the journal’s publication schedule
- Optimization of publishing processes
- Development of the journal’s content and profile
- Identifying topics for commissioning and driving the publication of subscription content
- Advocacy for the journal at conferences and in meetings
Travel for conference attendance will be required.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Several years’ experience within the publishing industry, especially with regard to journal processes and development
- A scientific background
- A thorough knowledge of the peer review process
- Excellent time management skills
- Some commissioning experience

The BMC-series journals are looking for enthusiastic interns who wish to gain experience in scientific publishing. The internships are designed to give the successful applicant in-depth editorial experience. Duties will include identifying and inviting potential peer reviewers for submitted research articles, choosing appropriate Associate Editors from journal Editorial Boards, writing brief research highlights, and journal development work such as identifying and recruiting Editorial Board Members. If an intern excels in performance and a position opens within the in-house team, then a transition to a permanent role is possible.
Each internship lasts for 3 months and is based in our London office, and the salary is £15,000 pro rata for this position. The ideal candidates will be highly motivated, enthusiastic PhD or Masters graduates with a broad interest in biology and/or medicine. No editorial experience is necessary.

Independent journals – Assistant Editor

Main duties
Set-up new journals
- Work with external Editors to prepare new/transfer journals for launch
- Setting up new journal websites and systems
- Organising ‘Call for paper’ mailings and other marketing materials for new journals
- Working with the Editors to ensure they have sufficient content
- Commissioning, checking and correcting editorials before journal launch
Support and development of existing journals
- Resolving queries passed on internally (for example, from customer services, Ed Prod etc.) by responding directly or passing them to the EIC.
- Providing timely support for editors, authors and reviewers using online peer review system.
- Proposing and involvement in carrying out improvements to the Editor’s Tools
- Selecting research for press release and writing research blurbs.
Reporting and Administration duties
- Reporting on individual and group activities for the Independent Journals monthly report.
- Proposing and carrying out improvements to procedures
- Ensuring all standard letters and in-house guidelines are kept up-to-date
- Maintaining accurate journal records in Salesforce.
- Accepting any additional responsibilities as requested by the Development Editor/Managing Editor/Editorial Director.
Requirements
Applicants must have:
- A biomedical degree
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong administrative and organisational skills, and attention to detail.
- Computer literacy, with experience of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Following a highly successful inaugural technical conference earlier in 2009 BioMed Central is looking to expand its corporate events function by hiring a dedicated Events Executive on a 12 month fixed term contact. Reporting to the Head of Public Relations and Events, the Event Executive will form a brand new events function for BioMed Central, producing and managing 2 international scientific conferences and also to assist with the planning of a wide range of both promotional and social functions across 2010.
The ideal candidate will have experience of the following:
- Researching markets to identify opportunities for events
- Producing detailed proposals for events (e.g. timelines, venues, suppliers, legal obligations, staffing and budgets)
- Agreeing to and managing a budget
- Securing and booking a suitable venue or location
- Ensuring insurance, legal, health and safety obligations are adhered to
- Coordinating venue management, caterers, stand designers, contractors and equipment hire
- Identifying and securing (with the help of the BioMed Central Editorial team) speakers or special guests
- Planning room layouts and the entertainment programme
- Coordinating staffing requirements
- Preparing delegate packs and papers
- Coordinating suppliers, handling client queries and troubleshooting on the day of the event to ensure that all runs smoothly
- Overseeing the dismantling and removal of the event and clearing the venue efficiently
- Post-event evaluation (including data entry and analysis and producing reports for event stakeholders)
As well as all the necessary skills and experiences outlined above, the Events Executive will have:
- A high degree of self motivation
- Excellent time management skills
- The ability to communicate effectively at all levels
- A can do attitude and willingness to work in a high pressure environment
