Assistant Editor (Special medical journals)

BioMed Central, a leading open access publisher of over 200 journals, has a vacancy for an Assistant Editor to join its editorial team. The successful candidate will provide a high quality and objective peer review service on a portfolio of established, specialist medical journals and assist with ongoing journal promotion and development. The current portfolio includes Arthritis Research & Therapy (http://arthritis-research.com) and Breast Cancer Research (http://breast-cancer-research.com). These journals have high-profile academic Editors-in-Chief and benefit from extensive in-house administrative support.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Liaison with peer reviewers, editorial boards and authors
  • Checking submitted manuscripts adhere to journal style
  • Copy editing article titles and abstracts
  • Identifying articles of potential interest to the media
  • Commissioning non-research articles
  • Identifying promotional opportunities for journals

We are seeking an enthusiastic, computer-literate biomedical/life science graduate with outstanding organisational skills. Excellent written and verbal communication are required. An eye for detail and the ability to prioritise whilst working to deadlines are essential. Experience of communicating effectively with senior scientists would be an advantage. The position would suit a recent graduate looking to begin a career in academic publishing.

BMC Series - Internships

The BMC-series journals are looking for enthusiastic interns who wish to gain experience in scientific publishing. The internships are designed to give the successful applicant in-depth editorial experience. Duties will include identifying and inviting potential peer reviewers for submitted research articles, choosing appropriate Associate Editors from journal Editorial Boards, writing brief research highlights, and journal development work such as identifying and recruiting Editorial Board Members. If an intern excels in performance and a position opens within the in-house team, then a transition to a permanent role is possible.

Each internship lasts for 3 months and is based in our London office, and the salary is £15,000 pro rata for this position. The ideal candidates will be highly motivated, enthusiastic PhD or Masters graduates with a broad interest in biology and/or medicine. No editorial experience is necessary.
