Editorial Assistant

Position Summary:

BMC Medicine is the flagship online medical journal of the BMC series published by BioMed Central. BMC Medicine publishes open access original research, commentary and review articles of outstanding quality, broad interest and special importance, aimed at keeping researchers and clinicians informed of the latest advances to affect the practice of medicine.

BioMed Central is seeking an enthusiastic and well-organised graduate to join its expanding editorial team as an Editorial Assistant for BMC Medicine. The Editorial Assistant will stay close to the cutting edge of scientific advances while developing a new career in a dynamic, open-access publishing environment.

Responsibilities.

The Editorial Assistant, together with other members of the editorial team, will identify and approach appropriate experts to peer review BMC Medicine manuscripts.

Additional responsibilities will include:

  • Manuscript database management
  • Booking manuscript meetings and minute taking
  • Administering the journal mailbox to ensure that all queries are responded to, including advocacy to referees and authors
  • Writing occasional blog posts for articles of interest
  • Liaising with other in-house editorial teams, production and marketing/social media teams.

Person specification.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a degree of equivalent in a relevant discipline, a Masters qualification is an advantage
  • Demonstrate a broad interest in biomedical research
  • Have excellent organisational and interpersonal skills

Journal Development Editor

Position Summary:

The main purpose of the job will be to optimise the publishing service and increase submissions for a set of journals within a specific biomedical area, through the execution of journal development work and by supporting our stakeholders. Communication is a key part of this role.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with Editors-in-Chief, Handling Editors, and society contacts.

Marketing Assistant

Position Summary

BioMed Central Ltd, is a leading online publisher of more than 200 biology and medical journals. A pioneer of the open access publishing model, BioMed Central is committed to providing free and permanent access to scientific research. In addition to publishing online journals, the company offers a number of additional online subscription services to assist the research community.

The Marketing Assistant will work on email, online and print marketing campaigns across a portfolio of subscription journals. The Marketing Assistant will also help to co-ordinate our attendance at conferences, from booking exhibition stands and producing materials to arranging shipping.

Responsibilities and Main Duties:

Marketing:

  • Assisting with a variety of email and direct mail campaigns
  • Updating and developing of print and banner advertising, print materials, conferences and sponsorships
  • Generating lists: sourcing lists from internal databases and list management
  • Co-ordinating email newsletters, print/online advertising and mailing schedules
  • Sales team support, including maintaining marketing email templates, collating literature etc.

Conferences:

  • Booking exhibition space, furniture, internet, electricity, carpet etc with exhibition and registration for exhibitors
  • Help attendees to organise travel including: booking laptops and mobile phones for conference attendees, booking hotels and flights
  • Preparing and packing materials for conference
  • Liaising with exhibition contractor to arrange stand delivery/collection and shipments from warehouse
  • Maintaining stock, including reordering stock where appropriate
  • Maintaining conference pages on website
  • Updating promotional materials (e.g. leaflets) with designer
  • Pre- and post conference mailings as appropriate
  • Ordering and sending of prizes for various competitions.

Person Specification:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent, ideally with a scientific background
  • Some professional experience, preferably in an office environment

Journal Acquisitions Intern

BioMed Central is looking for an enthusiastic intern who wishes to gain experience in scientific publishing to join its Journal Acquisitions team.

This internship will offer the successful applicant broad editorial experience including helping to assess the viability of new journal ideas and helping to develop pre-launch and recently launched journals. If an intern excels in performance and a position opens within the in-house team, a transition to a permanent role is possible.

The internship lasts for three months and is based in our London office. The salary is £15,000 p.a. pro rata for this position. The ideal candidate will be a life science graduate with an eye for detail and excellent communication skills. No editorial experience is necessary.
