Dr. Michael M.C. Lai, Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Biomedical Science since 2004, is a world-renowned virologist with more than 30 years experience in the field. He received an M.D. degree from National Taiwan University in 1968, a Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley in 1973, and has been a member of the faculty at University of Southern California ever since.
He joined Academia Sinica in Taiwan as a Vice President in 2003 and became the President of National Cheng Kung University in Tainan, Taiwan in 2007. He is noted for his pioneering research on the molecular biology and pathogenesis of coronaviruses, including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), hepatitis delta and hepatitis C viruses.
Dr. Lai received many awards, including the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator Award (1990-2003), and election to the membership of Academia Sinica, American Academy of Microbiology and TWAS (The Science Academy of the Third World). He has published more than 300 scientific articles and is a highly-cited researcher.
