Joel R McNeal, Jennifer V Kuehl, Jeffrey L Boore, Claude W de Pamphilis BMC Plant Biology 2007, 7:57 (24 October 2007) Parasitic Cuscuta species have surprisingly retained genes involved in photosynthesis, unlike the parasitic plant Epifagus which lost these genes, suggesting that selection on RuBisCo and photosystems is the primary reason for maintaining the plastid genome in Cuscuta.
