Image of the Month – September 2006
Double cones are absent from heat-lesioned zebrafish retinae. Red-green double cone photoreceptors (stained red) are destroyed and absent three days post-lesion in retinal pigmented epithelium. Cell nuclei are stained blue with DAPI. Thermal lesions induce mitotically-active retinal stem cells to differentiate, repairing the damage within a week.
