Image of the Month – March 2006

Abnormal head development in transgenic mice expressing fibroblast growth factor FGF9 in cranial mesenchymal cells. FGF9 transgenic mouse embryos show dramatic expansion of cartilage (blue) in the head region by day E15 (top panels) compared to non-transgenics (NT). At stage P10 (bottom panels) the cartilage territory is being replaced by bony structures (red).
