Role of zebrafish survivin genes in neurodevelopment. Survivin is an inhibitor of apoptosis which also promotes mitosis and cell proliferation, but its role in early development has been difficult to ascertain, as its absence causes embryonic lethality in mice. In zebrafish embryos, morpholino knockdown of survivin 2 (Birc5b) resulted in smaller heads, together with motor neurone disorganization, as visualized by suppression of islet1 expression (blue), a marker of primary motor neurons. Digoxigenin-labeled RNA probes to islet1 were used for in situ hybridization of an embryo 2 days post fertilization, viewed under brightfield microscopy.
