Pax6 overexpression in the mouse eye. Transgenic mice overexpressing Pax6 feature abnormally small eyes but have normal eye development until E12.5. At E14.5 minor defects of the optic disc are visible in mutant mice, as shown in horizontal sections through the eye, in spite of having the same localization pattern of Pax6 protein as in wild-type mice. Expression was monitored by immunostaining for Pax6 (green fluorescence) and nuclei were counterstained with TO-PRO3 (blue fluorescence).
