Sonic hedgehog expression in the regenerating zebrafish caudal fin
A two days post-amputation regenerating caudal fin, double immunostained with anti-GFP (green) and anti-Zns5 (marker of osteoblasts; red) in a transgenic zebrafish line expressing GFP under the control of the sonic hedgehog (shh) promoter. During this regenerative process, Zns5+ cells ceased to be localized in the middle of the differentiating bone and are aligned close to the basal layer of the epidermis where shh mRNA is produced.
