PRE-1 drives photoreceptor-specific gene expression
Appropriate transcriptional regulation is required for cone photoreceptor development and integrity. PRE-1, a cis-regulatory element, enhances photoreceptor-specific promoters. Three copies of PRE-1 were placed upstream of the rhodopsin promoter fragment controlling expression of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP). Confocal micrographs of retinal sections from 5 dpf zebrafish embryos injected with the (3x PRE-1)-1.2 kb ZOP-EGFP construct shows co-localization with a marker for rod photoreceptors. Staining shows EGFP (green), rod photoreceptors (4C12; red) and nuclei (DAPI; blue)
