Role of TrkB in ear fiber formation
Mutations of the phospholipase Cγ (PLCγ) docking site in the mouse neurotrophin tyrosine kinase receptor TrkB (Ntrk2) specifically impairs fiber guidance inside the vestibular sensory epithelia. TrkbPLC/PLC mutant mice ears were stained by lipophilic dye injected either into the cerebellum (red) or the brainstem (green) and left to diffuse. Ears were then fixed and visualized using a confocal microscope. The presence of overlapping fibers was detected by yellow staining and appears more frequently in TrkbPLC/PLC mutants compared to control, indicating that the apparent segregation of fibers from distinct central projection areas is partially disrupted.
