Thalidomide blocks angiogenesis in chicken embryos. Treatment of fertilized egg yolk with thalidomide inhibits the growth of blood capillaries at the edges of the vascular bed (left panel, before treatment; right panel, 12 hours after treatment). The inset on the right shows an estimated 70% loss of blood vessels.
