Image of the Month – October 2005

Polyploid skeletal muscle cells. Contrary to previous reports, aneuploidy does not appear to be a hallmark of Huntington's Disease as many polyploid cells are found in cell cultures derived from both R6/2 Huntington's Disease mice and wildtype littermates. Immunofluorescent analyses of skeletal muscles identified enlarged nuclei (arrow in the left panel) and nuclei with two (arrow in the right panel) or up to eight chromocenters (arrowhead in the right panel).
