The BMC Biology image modified for the cover of reprints of Liang & Nielsen on Who is H. sapiens?

The descent of H. sapiens is believed to be complicated by interbreeding with extinct hominin species This variant of the BMC Biology image, designed to mark the fusion of BMC Biology with its sister journal Journal of Biology in April 2010, was inspired by a Q&A piece by Mason Liang and Rasmus Nielsen discussing the recent evidence from sequencing of Neanderthal and Denisovan hominin DNA that Homo sapiens interbred with these extinct hominins.
