Comparative bacterial genomics identifies two sets of clustered genes, horizontally transferred rare genes, and 500 persistent genes, twice the number of essential genes. We investigate experimentally the role of persistent non-essential genes. They resolve metabolic conflicts, and code for energy-dependent degradation complexes trapping information and passing it over generations.
Open access should be the norm for publicly funded research: citizens paying taxes should not pay twice to have access to the knowledge they contribute to create.
