Results are shown for simulations of varied substrate availability of glucose, acetoactate, lactate and 6 different fatty aicids: palmitate, stearate, oleate, alpha-linoleate, eicosapentaenoate and docosahexaenoate. For each simulated composition efficiency values <a onClick="popup('http://www.biomedcentral.com/1752-0509/6/114/mathml/M62','MathML',630,470);return false;" target="_blank" href="http://www.biomedcentral.com/1752-0509/6/114/mathml/M62">View MathML</a> were calculated based on three criteria qj (j=1,2,..,nj): (1) oxygen requirement ( <a onClick="popup('http://www.biomedcentral.com/1752-0509/6/114/mathml/M63','MathML',630,470);return false;" target="_blank" href="http://www.biomedcentral.com/1752-0509/6/114/mathml/M63">View MathML</a>, q1) , (2) total substrate uptake rate (vs, q2) and (3) endogenous glucose dervied from glycogenolysis (vGL, q3). Results are ranked by the calculated efficiency <a onClick="popup('http://www.biomedcentral.com/1752-0509/6/114/mathml/M64','MathML',630,470);return false;" target="_blank" href="http://www.biomedcentral.com/1752-0509/6/114/mathml/M64">View MathML</a> in descending order and given for maximal and minimal calculated efficiency values. Further results are shown for each efficiency value of 0.3, 0.35, 0.4, 0.45, 0.5, 0.55, 0.6, 0.65. Rates for oxygen requirement ( <a onClick="popup('http://www.biomedcentral.com/1752-0509/6/114/mathml/M65','MathML',630,470);return false;" target="_blank" href="http://www.biomedcentral.com/1752-0509/6/114/mathml/M65">View MathML</a>), total substrate uptake rates (vs), glycogenolysis (vGL) and glycogen synthesis (vGS) are given in mmol ⋅ min−1 ⋅ (l cell)−1.
