Mean durations of the pre-symptomatic and symptomatic periods (expressed in hours) of the mice of the survival study. Mice were divided into 4 groups and inoculated with 104 (5 mice, 1 mouse was excluded from analysis due to lack of any symptoms due to failed inoculation), 105 (6 mice), 106 (6 mice) and 107 CFU (6 mice) S. pneumoniae per mouse. Comparison of the clinical scores of pre-symptomatic and symptomatic periods was made using a Kruskal- Wallis one-way ANOVA
