A: HT22 cells were treated with 7 mM glutamate in the presence or absence of 1 μM and 10 μM 17β-estradiol or Δ8,17β-estradiol for 8 hrs. Cell death was measured by LDH release assay. B: primary cortical cells isolated from 18 day old fetal rat brains were cultured for 7–8 days and were treated with 1 mM glutamate in the presence or absence of 1 μM and 10 μM 17β-estradiol or Δ8,17β-estradiol. LDH release was measured after 6 hrs of treatment. Data are the mean ± SEM values from at least three experiments *P < 0.05 compared to control; P < 0.05 compared to glutamate alone.
