Immunocytochemistry for neuron specific enolase (NSE) (green) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) (red). Cortical cells were grown in serum-free Neurobasal medium supplemented with 2% B27 for 7 days prior to dual staining and visualization with fluorescence and phase contrast microscopy. Images shown were taken at 300× magnification. All images are taken from the same field of view. A. Fluorescence image of cortical cells stained for NSE. Arrowheads represent cells stained positive for NSE. B. Phase contrast image of cortical cells. C. Fluorescence image of cells stained for GFAP. Note almost all cells in (B) stain positive for NSE (A) and no cells stain positive for GFAP (C) indicating absence of glia.
