Morphological quantification of neurogenesis in the olfactory bulb of WT and R6/2 mice comprises the following measures: total number of proliferating cells in the subventricular zone (PCNA), total number of surviving newly generated cells (BrdU), percentage of newly generated neurons (% BrdU/NeuN) and total number of new neurons (BrdU × % BrdU/NeuN) in the granular cell layer. For the glomerular layer, total number of surviving newly generated cells (BrdU), percentage of newly generated neurons (% BrdU/NeuN), percentage of newly generated dopaminergic neurons (% BrdU/TH), total number of new neurons (BrdU × % BrdU/NeuN) and total number of new dopaminergic neurons (BrdU × % BrdU/TH) are indicated. All measures are expressed as mean ± SD. # indicates significance comparing WT vs. R6/2 (p < 0.05).
