Parasitization by the wasp Eretmocerus mundus induces transcription of genes related to immune response and symbiotic bacteria proliferation in the whitefly Bemisia tabaci

Assaf Mahadav, Dan Gerling, Yuval Gottlieb, Henryk Czosnek, Murad Ghanim BMC Genomics 2008, 9:342 (18 July 2008)

Parasitization of the whitefly Blemisia tabaci by the wasp Eretmocercus mundus activates genes related to the immune response, as previously observed in Drosophila, and also induces the proliferation of Rickettsia, a bacterial endosymbiont of B. tabaci.

Immune system responses and fitness costs associated with consumption of bacteria in larvae of Trichoplusia ni

Dalial Freitak, Christopher W Wheat, David G Heckel, Heiko Vogel BMC Biology 2007, 5:56 (21 December 2007)

Non-pathogenic bacteria in food can trigger an immune response when they are eaten by insects and although this bacterial diet negatively affects insect growth, the trade-off may be a readiness to ward off serious infection.
