Note that Pa cells merely adhere to the surface of the insect phagocytes whereas in the presence of macrophages the bacteria grow as filaments that protrude from and invade the mouse phagocytes. Phagocytes are labelled with a TRITC-phalloidin conjugate to visualize their actin cytoskeletons.
